CONGRATULATIONS
We would like to congratulate our parish children who made their First Reconciliation this weekend with Fr. Steve Saturday
afternoon. Let us continue to pray for these children as they prepare to receive their First Communion this
Spring.
THOUGHTS ON GIVING 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go
on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’” - Mark 1:35, 38
Through today’s Gospel reading, we see a perfect
example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to doing all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. Yet Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer. It is only through
prayer, through spending time with God, that any of us can find the strength to do all that God wishes us to do. Be sure to find time this week to be with God.

THOUGHTS ON GIVING 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.” - 1 Corinthians 7:32 How many
anxieties do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about attaining ever more material possessions? Yet, God tells us that only the hand that is open to give can also be open to receive
His peace and joy. A heart or a hand clenched in anxiety and greed can never truly receive anything.

the Church and build up God’s Kingdom with the witness of their religious commitment. The homilist will be Very Reverend James Carini, Dean of the Vernon Deanery and Pastor of Saint
Matthew Parish in Tolland. All are invited to participate in the Mass.

Excerpts from Dr. Lowney’s letter:
Dear Father Ted & Nancy,
Thank you and the wonderful and caring 2012 Confirmation Class for raising the $1,497 to be used
to provide life-sustaining support, like food and medicine, for the poor of southwestern Haiti. It is always very special to me when young people reach out and work to raise funds to provide for
God’s poorest. We each have a stewardship of the gifts that are given to us, and as we learn in Matthew 25 at the point of judgment we will be asked to account for this stewardship.
I am confident that your Confirmation Class has a good start in accounting for the stewardship of your gifts.

the outstanding debt. Please be
generous.
THOUGHTS ON GIVING 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - Mark
1:17 Jesus’ call to “Come after me” is a call to all Christians. Jesus asks us all to help Him in His work. By being good stewards, we, too, can help bring others
closer to God. Dear Parishioners, Here are the Triduum poll
results:

In light of the results, we will move forward with planning to celebrate together Mass on
Holy Thursday, the Service on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. The Easter Sunday Masses will follow the regular Sunday schedule. In celebrating these liturgies,
every effort will be made to include as many people from each parish as possible and to include as many lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, musicians, ushers, and greeters as
possible. During the discussion and voting, there were concerns raised about parking in Jewett City. In looking over the grounds, I noticed that the former playground area is still fenced in
and not being used. With a little bit of work, this area can easily be used for overflow parking. In fact, someone has already volunteered to take the fence down. If you are
interested in helping with any part of the Triduum liturgies, please contact Father Steve or me.
Sincerely,
Fr. Ted Tumicki Musicians wanted. Anyone who is interested in singing with the Choir for the Easter Triduum is asked to see Howard Drye (the music director), Father Ted, or Father Steve. Rehearsals will start shortly.
PARISH BAPTISM We welcome into our parish family Sophia Elizabeth Friday, daughter of Christopher & Elizabeth Friday, who was baptized this past
weekend. God’s blessings on this family.
CONFIRMATION MEETING PARENTS & STUDENTS
A Parent & Students meeting concerning the continuing Confirmation process will take place on Tuesday, January 24th at 7:00 pm in
the Siena

January 5,
2012
(To be read at all Masses or reprinted in the parish bulletin on the weekend of January 21-22, 2012.)
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
We begin the New Year with the
39th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision of the United States Supreme Court, I write you to commend your efforts to build a culture of life in our country. This year’s respect life theme
from the USCCB is “I came so that all might have life and have it to the full.”(JN 10:10)
This country is based upon freedom. It is one of the foundational principles of our
constitution, but as Pope John Paul II reminded all of us in a mass at Camden Yards on October 8, 1995 in Baltimore, MD: “Freedom consists not in doing what we want but what we
ought.” If we are to live the “glorious freedom of the Children of God”(Rom 8:21) we must respect and defend the right to life of the most innocent among us, unborn children.
The “Roe v Wade” Supreme Court decision in 1973 declined to state whether or not an unborn child is a “person”. Recent developments in prenatal screening and nic-unit
technology have made it possible for children to live much earlier than before. This is a positive sign. However, much work needs to be done.
To build a culture that affirms life we need to
address the full spectrum of life issues. In his encyclical Evangelium Vitae Pope John Paul II stated that “abortion and contraception are fruits of the same tree.” (EV 1:13) In the same
letter Pope John Paul II also states that “the pro-abortion culture is especially strong when the Church’s teaching on contraception is rejected.”
To truly be a culture that
affirms all life we need to apply the same principles in every moral case that is presented in society. This applies to embryonic stem cell research which the church has consistently opposed,
opposition to reproductive technologies that dehumanize the act of procreation, and opposition to new movements to promote “euthanasia” and the “death penalty” as solutions to
society’s problems. We also must apply the same principle in our outreach to those born with disabilities and special needs and our care for the poorest in our midst. In each and every
case it is the inviolable dignity of the human person created in the image of the Triune God that should guide all of our actions.
Together let us work together to build a culture that affirms
life from conception to natural death.
Asking the Lord of life to bless you and your loved ones, I remain
Sincerely yours in
Christ,
MOST

“Thank You” goes out to all parishioners who continue to drop off dry & can goods (especially peanut butter & jelly) in our boxes at the front doors of the church. Our
Ecumenical Food Pantry at the Preston City Congregational Church continues to help feed families in our
town. THOUGHTS ON GIVING Epiphany of the Lord
“They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh...” - Matthew 2:11 Notice the distinct order of events in the Magi’s visit. First they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented
Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we presume to present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what gifts God might be asking us to share. But when we kneel
before Him in prayer we will find the answer.
JOYFUL NOISE CHOIR THANK YOU We
want to thank the children of the parish who faithfully attended the rehearsals and made our Christmas Eve Family Mass so spiritually enriching. Your beautiful voices are true gifts from
God.
NATIONAL COMBINED COLLECTION Today we will take up the National Combined Collection which benefits: The Retirement Fund for Religious, The Annual Appeal for
the Holy Father, The Catholic Communications Campaign, and Catholic University of America. Your generous support is greatly appreciated. You should have received information about this
collection and a gift envelope. If you forgot to bring your envelope to Mass today or you did not receive the mailing, extra envelopes are available at each door. Please be as generous as your
means allow. Thank you.
NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK
Keep the spirit of joy alive! Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany and Monday, the feast of the Baptism of the
Lord. This week, January 9-14, is dedicated to National Vocation Awareness Week. By our baptism we are commissioned to follow Jesus. The Church needs dedicated people as married and
single people, and men and women to serve as priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters.
MARCH FOR LIFE BUS TRIP
January 22, 2012, marks the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s infamous abortion-on-demand ruling. Because of that decision, millions of pre-born babies have been denied their most
basic right - their right to life. On Monday, January 23, 2012, people from across the nation will assemble in Washington, D.C. to visibly express their opposition to abortion. On Sunday, January
22, 2012 at 9: P.M., buses will leave from the Norwich Municipal Parking Lot (Exit 80, I-395) and travel to D.C. for the March For Life on January 23, 2012. The first stop in Washington will be at
the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Bus fare is $58 per person. If you are unable to attend the March For Life, please consider sponsoring a seat on the bus. For further information and/or
to reserve a seat or to sponsor a seat, please call Margaret Becotte at 860-822-1362.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in
Christ,
Annually, the Church in the United States celebrates National Vocation Awareness Week (January 9-14). During these days, we reflect upon on our own vocation and we pray for vocations
to the priesthood and consecrated life.
Through faith we know that God has created every human being as unique and unrepeatable. God has given our lives purpose, a calling that fulfills His
plan for us. This week is devoted to discerning through prayer and the Sacraments our vocation and to pray for those whom the Lord calls to priesthood, diaconate, religious life, marriage, or the
single state. As we embrace that gift, the Lord sustains us with His love. He strengthens us through His grace and makes available everything we need to live faithfully our response to His
call.
Today, those who are called to live sacramentally a life of Holy Matrimony are under attack. We need to join them in prayer that they will be faithful to their marriage vows. At the
same time, we must pray for young women and men who are preparing for marriage. They need the prayerful support of all of us in God’s family to live in fidelity and love all the days of their
lives.
Certainly, all of us are aware of the challenges priests face today. I am very grateful to my brother priests for their faithfulness, dedication, and commitment. The Norwich Diocese has
always enjoyed many prayerful, talented, and zealous priests. Yet we still face difficult times. Currently, the Diocese has five (5) men studying for the priesthood. Daily we pray that they will
persevere in responding to God’s call to priesthood. At the same time, sixteen (16) priests will be reaching retirement age in the next four (4) years. This startling statistic underlines
the importance of praying for vocations.
During this National Vocation Awareness Week, let us take the time to pray for all who answer God’s call – priests, deacons, and
religious, married couples, and those in the single state – that they may be strengthened in living their vocations and that they may be dedicated and faithful in their service to the Lord and
the Church.
May God our Heavenly Father bestow His blessings upon you throughout the coming year!
Sincerely yours in
Christ,
MICHAEL R. COTE, D.D.
Bishop of Norwich
Insert 2: Triduum Proposal.doc - January 5,
2012
Dear Parishioners,
Several items have come up that I want to bring to your attention.
The
first item concerns Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday in April. A proposal has been made regarding the celebration of the liturgy within our cluster of three parishes: Rather
than each parish “doing its own thing” and celebrating three separate liturgies in three different locations at the same time, why not have one liturgy for all the parishes at one time in
the largest Church building, i.e., Saint Mary’s? The Easter Sunday schedule of Masses would follow the regular Sunday schedule. As with any proposal, there are positives and
negatives. The positives include the facts that all the ministries would work together – all the music ministries, all the altar servers, and all the lectors and Eucharistic
ministers. Also, there would be a larger gathering of people, which would enhance and magnify the level of participation. Additionally, we will not have to arrange for an extra priest to
cover the third set of liturgies during this part of the Triduum. The negatives include the fact that two of the three parish church buildings will not have a Mass on Holy Thursday, a service on
Good Friday, or an Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Also, parking in Jewett City can be a bit difficult. Before making a final decision on this proposal, I am asking everyone to prayerfully
consider the proposal and then vote in a non-binding poll. Next weekend, January 14 and 15, the non-binding poll will be taken. Specifically each person will be asked to choose one of the
following options: •Yes, I am open to having one liturgy for all three parishes on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil; •No, I am not open to having one liturgy for all three
parishes on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil; •I have no preference either way. Please think about the proposal, reflect on it, and pray about it and cast your vote next
weekend.
Also next weekend, our two deacons, Deacon Paul Baillargeon and Deacon Tony Dombkowski, will begin preaching at the Sunday Masses on a rotating monthly basis. While they were
reassigned to the entire cluster last June, they have not had a chance to preach at the Masses with all of the Mass changes taking place. With the changes now implemented, the deacons now have
a chance to exercise their ministry in a fuller way.
Last, but certainly not least, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Sheila Landry is the new secretary/bookkeeper at St. Mary Parish
in Jewett City. Sheila’s office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Welcome aboard, Sheila! It’s great to have you here!
Sincerely,
Father Ted
Tumicki
